Video shows Bucs’ Mike Evans, Chris Godwin marvel at Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl 55: ‘He’s a magician’
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Patrick Mahomes may have failed to lead the Chiefs to a win in Super Bowl 55, but he still left a lasting impact on at least a few Buccaneers players in the 31-9 loss. The defending Super Bowl MVP was forced to extend and create plays with his feet all game against Todd Bowles' aggressive defense, which took advantage of the fact that Kansas City was without its two starting tackles. Mahomes on several occasions ran for his life while avoiding Tampa defenders, only to throw a last-second pass that just missed its mark. Never was that more apparent than when he nearly threw a fourth-down touchdown while his body was parallel to the ground. Regardless of his effectiveness, Mahomes' backyard-styled football clearly amazed Bucs receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Scotty Miller. Video from the game shows them marveling on the sidelines at the Chiefs quarterback:MORE: Mahomes' run of sheer genius ends abruptly in Super Bowl 55 "Magician," indeed. Especially when you take into account he did this with a case of surgery-requiring turf toe.Mahomes completed only 26 of 49 passes for 270 yards and two interceptions — both off tipped passes — but his inability to score on Sunday clearly wasn't for a lack of effort (his receivers also suffered from some untimely drops). As much as the loss surely stings for Mahomes — it was the first time since he took over the starting position that he didn't throw for a touchdown — he can take some cold comfort in the fact he did everything he could in the losing effort. .

LeSean McCoy wins second straight Super Bowl without playing in either game
By admin | | 0 Comments |

With the Buccaneers' 31-9 win over the Chiefs on Sunday, Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl ring — an all-time amazing feat that eclipses every single NFL franchise in league history. Not to be missed in that incredible statistic: Brady's teammate, running back LeSean McCoy, who won his second consecutive Super Bowl ring without having played in either game. Not bad work, if you can get it.MORE: Robert Horry offers best congratulatory message for Brady after his seventh Super BowlMcCoy earned his first Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs for the 2019 season. In his one year in Kansas City, he ran 101 times for 465 yards and four scores, adding 28 receptions for 181 yards and another touchdown. But he only played in one offensive snap the entire playoffs, against Houston, and was declared inactive for the Chiefs' 31-20 win over the 49ers in Super Bowl 54.Either way, it still counts; that's Super Bowl ring No. 1. After Shady ended his one-year stint in Kansas City, he signed another such deal with Tampa Bay. This time, he played in only 12 games all season, including the Bucs' two postseason wins over New Orleans and Green Bay. While he was deemed active for Super Bowl 55, however, he did not take a snap. That gives him season totals of 10 carries for 31 yards and 15 receptions for 101 yards.Again: It still counts. So that's Super Bowl ring No. 2.Not to detract anything from McCoy, of course. He's an NFL veteran who played a role with both Super Bowl-winning teams, even if he didn't get to contribute in the big game. Call it a reward for a fantastic career, which prior to 2019 included six seasons of at least 1,000 yards rushing and eight straight seasons of at least 1,000 yards from scrimmage — but zero Super Bowl wins. .

Racism is why your favorite team hired a sorry white guy instead of a really good Black Super Bowl coach
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Stupid is as stupid does.Racism has always caused white people to make really bad decisions, especially in sports. I mean, how else can you explain the cliff that baseball has fallen off given the way the sport has treated Black players at every level for decades. The determination to keep certain aspects of sports as white as possible has always come at a cost. And on Sunday night, the world watched as three of football’s best coaches — who happened to be Black — had to serve as assistants due to white owners not hiring them for one of the seven head coaching vacancies that have been filled over the past few weeks. In September, I wrote about how racism is why teams usually draft sorry white quarterbacks, as I broke down some recent drafts in which multiple teams have totally whiffed on selecting a franchise Black quarterback, all because they preferred a sorry white one.Hatred and bigotry really are terrible business models.A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the two teams left standing after an unforgettable season due to COVID-19, had staffs that were filled with women and Black coaches. It was the ultimate example of all the benefits that come along when diversity is encouraged and supported. After every Super Bowl, the winning quarterback and both head coaches get a ton of the attention, praise, and blame for what worked and didn’t work. That’s just how it is. But, in a game in which three of the four offensive and defensive coordinators were Black, we need to address how well those men did, and why they won’t be leading their own teams next season.Image: Getty ImagesG/O Media may get a commissionEric Bieniemy - OC, Kansas City ChiefsFor the last few weeks, all we’ve heard are rumors that Bieniemy (the poster child for how overqualified Black candidates get passed over), doesn’t “interview well,” which is why he hasn’t been hired. That lie was put to rest when the Lions hired a man that wants his team to bite their opponents’ kneecaps. The other excuse we heard was that since Bieniemy didn’t “call the plays” in Kansas City, Andy Reid was the reason why the Chiefs offense and Patrick Mahomes were so great. Well, since the Chiefs and Mahomes both sucked on Sunday night and were held to just three field goals, as Mahomes threw two interceptions and was barely over 50 percent, Bieniemy can’t be blamed for Reid’s play-calling failures. The lack of production is squarely on the shoulders of Reid and his quarterback. You can’t have it both ways.Image: Getty ImagesByron Leftwich - OC, Tampa Bay BuccaneersThis is what was said about Leftwich before the Super Bowl:“I was very, very pissed Byron at least didn’t get an interview this year. For the job that he’s done, I get way too much credit and so does Tom Brady.” – Bruce Arians. “Now that we’re working together, it’s been great. He’s got a great work ethic, great football IQ and it’s been a growing process for both of us in growing together. When you work together for a long period of time, we began to see the game very similarly. When he’s watching film, he thinks, ‘Oh, this is what Tom would like,’ and vice versa.” – Tom Brady. One of the most beloved head coaches in NFL history and the greatest football player of all time are all huge fans of Leftwich, and he couldn’t even get an interview. Sunday night, the Bucs offense scored 31 points and accumulated 26 first downs, 340 yards, averaged 5.4 yards a play, and didn’t turn the ball over once. You would think an offensive coach of that caliber would demand some level of respect. But after the game, Leftwich was busy correcting media members that think all Black people look alike.Image: APTodd Bowles: DC, Tampa Bay BuccaneersDrew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, or Patrick Mahomes. It doesn’t matter. If you put a future hall of fame quarterback in front of a Todd Bowles defense, he will make them look bad.According to NextGenStats, Mahomes ran 497 yards before throwing the ball or being sacked on Sunday night, making it the highest total for any quarterback this season. Bowles barely blitzed and took away the Chiefs’ most explosive weapon in Tyreek Hill, as he was held to seven catches for just 73 yards. The scheme was a masterpiece, as Bowles’ defense turned Mahomes into the one thing he is not, a game manager. Instead of the exciting big plays and ridiculous passes he throws multiple times a game, we’ve never seen Mahomes be a quarterback that can methodically take his team down the field for multiple drives. Bowles knew that and exposed the biggest hole in Mahomes’ game. Now, this is the part where someone will bring up the fact that Bowles had “his chance” when he was the head coach of the New York Jets from 2015-2018. And because of that, I will also remind you that in his first season in New York, Bowles won more games over two seasons (10) than did Adam Gase, the sorry white coach that replaced him (9).Sadly, the trio of Bieniemy, Leftwich, and Bowles will all be assistant coaches next season. Hopefully, they’ll get interview opportunities, but that remains to be seen. You have to prepare for the worse and hope for the best whenever it comes to race relations and the NFL. Because in case you forgot, during the Super Bowl the league ran a commercial about how they’ve committed $250 million to combating systemic racism, all while still being a proponent of systemic racism by the continued blackballing of Colin Kaepernick. .

Tom Brady was fine, but give the Bucs’ defense their due
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Tampa’s Shaq Barrett was on top of Patrick Mahomes all throughout last night’s lopsided victory.Photo: Getty ImagesThere is zero chance I would have believed you last week if you told me that the Chiefs, with one of the most explosive and creative offenses in the NFL, and with one of the most talented arms the league has ever seen, would be kept out of the end zone in the Super Bowl. But that happened. The Buccaneers defense did something nobody was able to accomplish all season — hold Kansas City without a touchdown.I had my concerns. I asked Patrick Mahomes last week how the team was preparing to face a very talented defensive front, knowing that the loss of left tackle Eric Fischer was a blow to their offensive line; the Chiefs entered Sunday with only one of their five presumptive starters on the line from the preseason. Mahomes knew it would be a battle. He said in part:It’s going to be a great challenge for them, but we’re going to do what we can to get the ball out of my hands, and get it to the playmakers and let them make plays with it.So let’s talk about that. Firstly, the Chiefs offensive line was overwhelmingly mismatched. While Mahomes was only sacked three times, he was under constant siege, oftentimes scrambling nearly twenty yards behind the line of scrimmage to avoid the pressure. While the optics showed that to be the case, the stats are worse. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Patrick Mahomes was pressured more in this game than any quarterback in Super Bowl History (29), passing the record of 25 set by Jim Kelly in SB XXVI. Brady faced his fewest pressures (4) in any Super Bowl of his career. The fact that he took only three sacks on 29 pressures is a Herculean effort. According to NextGenStats, the Chiefs used a 5-man protection on 92.3 percent of their dropbacks. How the Chiefs didn’t gameplan to use additional blockers knowing their offensive line was vastly depleted is beyond me, and it cost them. Head Coach Andy Reid is notorious for making in-game adjustments. This is one that he missed.G/O Media may get a commissionWhile Mahomes was running for his life and trying to make otherworldly plays, his teammates didn’t help. On one of his seemingly endless scrambles last night, while falling to the ground, Mahomes flicked the ball on a rope 30 yards towards the end zone. In my opinion, this would have been the greatest Super Bowl touchdown pass of all time had Darrell Williams caught it instead of letting it hit him square in the facemask. After the game, I asked Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis about covering the Chiefs skill players for so long in coverage as Mahomes was scrambling and trying to make plays happen. Carlton said:I mean it’s something that we knew that they did a lot, and we knew that they had a lot of success with [Mahomes] getting out of the pocket, and creating more time for his receivers to get down field, so that was a big emphasis this whole week – to just plaster to the receivers, stay on top of him even when he’s outside the pocket, and just trust the D-line and trust that they would get him down.Carlton was in coverage for 54 coverage snaps. He was targeted only four times, allowing two receptions for only 14 yards, and the Buccaneers defense held Mahomes to 270 passing yards, two interceptions, and zero touchdowns. There’s no chance the Buccaneers would have dreamed this game would go any better, on both sides of the ball. .

Don’t be stupid, Patrick Mahomes is still coming for GOAT status
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Patrick Mahomes is pressured by Shaq Barrett in Sunday Night’s Super Bowl.Image: Getty ImagesPlease, please, please before you bring out these “Patrick Mahomes will never be the GOAT Takes” I beg of you to really dissect the game you just watched. The circumstances that Mahomes faced during Super Bowl LV would have been unmanageable for any quarterback in NFL history including Tom Brady.I know for the last two weeks pundits have filled your head with this nonsense that if Mahomes loses to Brady the young star will never have a chance of surpassing the legend as the GOAT. If you believed them, I’m here to tell you that you’re smarter than that.Anyone who watched that game last night understands that the Chiefs’ offensive line never truly gave this man a chance.Mahomes was pummeled all night from the pressure of the Tampa Bay front seven. He was playing behind an offensive line that only had one original starter left and that was center Austin Reiter. Kelechi Osemele, Mitchell Schwartz, and most recently tackle Eric Fisher were all lost to season-ending injuries. Not to mention guard Dr. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif selflessly opted out to combat COVID-19 at a long-term care facility in Quebec.G/O Media may get a commissionAccording to ESPN Stats and Info, Mahomes was pressured on 52 percent of his total dropbacks. He was the most pressured quarterback in Super Bowl history. To make matters worse, Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles didn’t even have to dial up a lot of pressure against the young star. Mahomes only faced a blitz on 6 of his dropbacks. Out of the 29 times, he was pressured on Sunday, 27 of them were the result of a four-man rush or fewer.Ladies and Gentlemen that is absurd when you consider the fact that there are five offensive linemen in the game on every snap from scrimmage. The offensive line’s inability to protect Mahomes forced him to run nearly 500 yards on his dropbacks. If I hadn’t known any better I would have thought I was watching Forrest Gump on the field. The saddest part about the whole night was the fact that Mahomes was still giving his team a chance despite having to do more tricks than a Bourbon street magician looking for tips. Even after an atrocious performance from his offensive line, he was only sacked three times which is a testament to his athleticism more than his teammates. There were also two very crucial drops that swung momentum in this game. One was a Travis Kelce drop in the second quarter that stalled the drive and forced the Chiefs to punt. The Buccaneers would score on the following possession. The second one was the drop that solidified the game for the Buccaneers. At the start of the fourth quarter, it was 4th down and the Chiefs needed a touchdown to keep their hopes alive. Mahomes runs for three miles to avoid getting sacked and as he falls to the ground somehow gets off a perfect pass as he’s horizontal to Damien Williams that bounces off his helmet and falls incomplete. So, um, this Mahomes pass wound up being ridiculously accurate.Image: Getty ImagesCombine these things with the fact that the Chiefs were racking up more penalty flags like they were on a two for one sale, and you realize exactly why the Chiefs got curb stomped in Super Bowl LV.Yet, as time goes on, the memory of this game will fade and the final result will be that Brady was victorious over Mahomes. Many will forget the circumstances Mahomes played under and use this Super Bowl as a tiebreaker between the two for a GOAT conversation years down the road. For all my fellow sports fans, let’s please not forget what exactly happened in this Super Bowl.Mahomes was overwhelmed by injuries to his line and the shortcomings of his teammates in this game. It’s a Super Bowl loss that will taint his record, but as we look back 15 years later, this should not be the game we judge his greatness on if he enters the same stratosphere as Brady.Even Brady took his lumps on the biggest stage. Two of them were to Eli Manning of all people. When you are that great you usually win big and lose big.We allowed Brady to have more than 20 seasons to show us exactly why he’s the GOAT for now. Let’s just make sure we give Mahomes that same luxury. This game won’t settle any GOAT conversations; only time can do that. .

That's despite the game being played in Tampa Bay's home, Raymond James Stadium.Super Bowl odds (via DraftKings Sportsbook):Point spread: Chiefs -3.5Over/under total: 57.5Super Bowl picks, predictions:Vinnie Iyer: Last year in this space, I somehow went with a pick against Patrick Mahomes. Let's correct that now, because the Chiefs are playing as complete Super Bowl reigning champions.Tom Brady has done great work leading the Buccaneers and raising their offensive efficiency. The "home team" also has a pretty good overall defense. But the Chiefs counter well and have QB play, pass defense, coaching and experience all on their side on top of that unstoppable, intimidating feeling. Although Brady will have his typical Super Bowl moments, Mahomes will have a lot more of his to ensure the Chiefs repeat, keeping himself on a special trajectory to rack up rings.Prediction: Chiefs 31, Buccaneers 27Bill Bender: Patrick Mahomes passed for 462 yards in the regular-season meeting, and at one point it looked like Tyreek Hill would set the single-game receiving record. Tackle Eric Fisher’s injury is a major storyline given how Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul were able to combine for five sacks in the NFC championship game, but Mahomes presents more of a challenge because of his mobility.Look for a similar game to emerge the second-time around. Kansas City will build a first-half lead behind TD passes to Hill and Travis Kelce, but Tom Brady — as he so often does — will lead a comeback in the second half. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Rob Gronkowski will make their share of plays in the passing games, and Leonard Fournette will be more involved this time around. In the end, however, the Chiefs don’t give Brady a chance to lead the game-winning drive. Mahomes wins Super Bowl MVP honors again, and Andy Reid starts thinking about a three-peat.Prediction: Chiefs 35, Buccaneers 32Mike DeCourcy: There is no such thing as an undeserving Super Bowl entrant. Getting into the NFL Playoffs, when margins in the league are so narrow between success and failure, is an underrated accomplishment. Maneuvering through those playoffs to the ultimate stage is amazing.Sometimes, that achievement needs to be embraced — because that’s as good as it’s going to get.The Buccaneers were a 7-9 team a year ago. They were 5-11 the year before that. Now, they are a Super Bowl team. Soon they will be a Super Bowl loser, but until kickoff they can revel in the overnight quality of their success. They brought in an “aging” Tom Brady, watched him wrestle with the conversion to a new system, heard those who doubted it ever would take and now can laugh at those who wondered if he could be successful with a different team, at an age when most NFL players are long since retired. The Super Bowl will not be about Brady, though. It will be about how Tampa can stop Patrick Mahomes. They did an excellent job against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. But this is even a half-step beyond that. And they won’t succeed. Mahomes is too elusive, too inventive. It will not be easy for KC, but it will be done.Prediction: Chiefs 33, Buccaneers 24Matt Lutovsky: The Buccaneers don’t have many weaknesses, but if there’s one area they struggle, it’s pass defense. That’s not ideal against Patrick Mahomes and company, so unless the loss of Eric Fisher (Achilles’) opens the door for Tampa’s solid pass rush to wreak havoc, Kansas City should have a key advantage. Tampa will be able to run with its dynamic duo in the backfield — and it figures to shut down KC on the ground — but Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill are playing so well it might not matter. Throw in an opportunistic Kansas City defense against a somewhat mistake-prone Bucs offense, and you have just enough reason to like the Chiefs here.Prediction: Chiefs 30, Buccaneers 24Joe Rivera: The more things change, the more they stay the same. While the Chiefs aren’t playing the 49ers in the Super Bowl this year, the matchup looks very similar in a lot of ways, and a lot like last year, the Chiefs’ defense is the key ingredient that isn’t been talked about enough throughout another KC romp through the playoffs. While Patrick Mahomes (deservedly) gets most of the praise for being a human “Madden” glitch, the Chiefs’ defense held one of the NFL’s most potent offenses to just 15 points through three quarters in the AFC championship game, with a few inconsequential scores bumping up the Bills’ total to 24 points. The Chiefs are, once again, playing a top-level defense with a pretty killer pass rush. Without left tackle Eric Fisher (out with an Achilles tear), Kansas City will have its hands full with both Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaq Barrett, though Mahomes’ mobility and Andy Reid’s creative play-calling will likely mitigate the threat of the pass rush, much like they did in Super Bowl 54. In order to beat a Brady-led team, you have to play a near perfect game. Tampa Bay’s wide receiver corps is going to be a lot to deal with. The run game will be, too.But the “Patrick Price” is going to be too much for Brady and the Bucs to pay, and Mahomes will get his playoff revenge for the 2018 AFC championship game loss to then-Patriot Brady.Prediction: Chiefs 34, Buccaneers 24Billy Heyen: As much as everyone will bill this matchup as Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady, it's really Mahomes versus the Buccaneers' pass rush. Mahomes, the far better quarterback than Brady at this stage, needs to be neutralized for Tampa Bay to have any shot of winning. We already saw in Week 12 that the Buccaneers have no shot of covering Tyreek Hill. And Travis Kelce has proven time and again this season that basically no one can guard him. If Mahomes has time to stand in and deliver to his top weapons, it'll be a long day for the de facto home team in Tampa. Even if Mahomes doesn't have time, he may just be too good to stop, anyway.Yes, it's remarkable that Brady is in his 10th Super Bowl in his first year with a new team at age 43. But for all his GOAT-ness, Brady can't impact Mahomes' performance in Super Bowl 55.Prediction: Chiefs 34, Buccaneers 24 .

How much money do NFL players make for winning the Super Bowl in 2021?
By admin | | 0 Comments |

There's only one side of the Super Bowl that players want to be on: The winning side. Of course, that's mostly to do with getting to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, don a Super Bowl ring and have eternal glory as someone who can claim to be a Super Bowl champion. But there's a nice financial incentive, too. When the Buccaneers take on the Chiefs in Super Bowl 55, the winners' share will be twice as much as the losers' share. Individual players often have their own bonuses associated with winning the Super Bowl, too. In 2021, that includes Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady. Here's more of what you need to know about the money being made on the field during Super Bowl 55.MORE SUPER BOWL:Top 10 winning teams | All-time best gamesHow much do NFL players make for winning Super Bowl?In 2021, the winners' share for Super Bowl 55 is $130,000.When added up with the winners' shares from the prior postseason rounds, the Super Bowl-winning players will overall take home about $250,000 from the league for winning their way to the Lombardi Trophy. For comparison's sake, the NFL shared what the winners' share was like in 1978 for Super Bowl 13. What channel is the Super Bowl on? Chiefs vs. Buccaneers time, TV schedule, streaming for 2021

You won't have to look hard to find Chiefs vs. Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 on your television. And it's even got a nice, relatively early start time so that the kids can stay up for the whole thing before going to school the next day. Just tune your TV set to CBS by 6:30 p.m. ET to see Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes face off in maybe the greatest Super Bowl quarterback matchup in NFL history. There are certainly riveting dueling narratives for the game. On one side, Brady's Buccaneers are playing at home in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium in Brady's first year away from the Patriots. On the other side is last year's Super Bowl MVP Mahomes and the reigning champion Chiefs. Mahomes and the Chiefs only lost one game all season, way back on Oct. 11 to the Raiders. Since then, they've made relatively light work of the entire NFL as Mahomes has continued to thrive in his third year as a starter in the Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy offense. Combined with dominant weapons like wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce, Kansas City is tough to stop.MORE: Watch Super Bowl 55 live with fuboTV (7-day free trial)But if anyone can find a way to win yet again on the biggest stage, it's Brady. He's won six Super Bowls in his career, but those were all in New England. He departed Bill Belichick and company in the offseason, choosing to join Bruce Arians' Buccaneers in pursuit of another title even at 43 years old. There was already offensive firepower in place in the form of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Ronald Jones, and veterans followed Brady in the hopes of this exact stage, including Antonio Brown, Rob Gronkowski and Leonard Fournette.Tampa Bay will be the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium, and it will be only the second Super Bowl in franchise history. They won their only other appearance, back in Super Bowl 37 in 2003.The Chiefs played in the first and fourth Super Bowls, winning in 1970 in their second appearance, but then went 50 years without playing in the season's final game. Patrick Mahomes read ‘Mean Tweet’ that predicted Chiefs’ COVID scare before Super Bowl 55
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Kansas City nearly paid the "Patrick Price" for a haircut this week ahead of Super Bowl 55. The team's barber — scheduled to cut hair of more than 20 Chiefs players and staff members — tested positive for COVID-19 and nearly caused the team to force quarterback Mahomes to be deemed a close contact. That raises the question of why Kansas City would allow the barber to cut players' hair before confirming they were negative for the coronavirus. (To be fair, the barber had tested negative for the disease for five days straight prior to the positive test). Regardless, an unintentionally funny detail from the episode is that the barber was pulled midway through cutting center Daniel Kilgore's hair. Though he was deemed a close contact, Kilgore at least had fun with the situation. What's less funny and more spooky is the fact that it was eerily predicted in the form of a mean tweet. Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday revealed that Mahomes — who reportedly was next in line for his cut before the barber was pulled — joined an all-NFL cast of the "Mean Tweet" skit. Here's the tweet Mahomes read:"I imagine Patrick Mahomes barber is a superhero. Who has to run out and save the world everytime he gets half way through Mahomes hair cut."MORE: Chiefs players landed on COVID-19 list after haircutsAnd here's the video, which was taped well in advance of the Super Bowl: As Kimmel says: Life imitates art.Either way, the scare could have been much worse if the team had found out about the barber's COVID even just a little later. As it stands now, only Kilgore and receiver Demarcus Robinson have been deemed close contacts and placed on the COVID-19 list. They can still potentially make the Super Bowl by testing negative for the disease five straight days.Kickoff for Super Bowl 55 against the Buccaneers is at 6:30 p.m., so it's possible they can play, even if it's with just a haircut-and-a-half. .
